Teen's project is music to school teacher's ears
Julia Freire combined her love of scouting and music to create a project that earned her the highest honor in Girl Scouting, the Gold Award. "For my Gold Award project, I wanted to give something back to the community and have children experience music," said Julia, 16, who has just completed her junior year at Freehold Township High School.

Chamber of Commerce holds awards night
Members of the Edison Chamber of Commerce recognized their own during the chamber's annual awards dinner on June 17 at the Pines Manor on Route 27. The 300-member business organization also swore in its new officers. The event was attended by prominent members of Edison's business and non-profit community as well as representatives from the township government.

Students perform in concert
The Cecilian Music Club held its 17th annual Cecilian Awards Winners' Concert in Woodrow Wilson Auditorium at Monmouth University, West Long Branch, on May 18. The musicians who played in the recital ranged in age from 7 to 18 and had to win an adjudicated audition in order to perform.

Parades and fireworks to put pop in Independence Day celebration
Craven and Pamlico county residents won't have to spend a lot of gasoline to find July 4th weekend festivities. Celebrations are scheduled Friday in New Bern, Oriental, Havelock and River Bend. In Oriental, the annual Croaker Festival continues with a parade and fireworks on Saturday.

Music legends Orleans will perform in Marlboro
