Angel Tavira: One-handed fiddler in 'The Violin'
Angel Tavira will be remembered as the wizened, one-handed octogenarian fiddler in the acclaimed 2005 Mexican film El Violin, also known as The Violin. He was 81 at the time and had never acted before, but in a sense he barely had to, for in real life, he was a wizened, one-handed octogenarian fiddler. In any case, his performance won him Best Actor award, in the specialist Un Certain Regard ...

On Some Faraway Beach, By David Sheppard
There's an epigraph in David Sheppard's meticulously-researched biography that perfectly encapsulates why Brian Eno has become avant-garde pop's best-loved backroom boy. The Pits, Bridewell Hall, London
Why would a singing group call themselves The Pits – because they know they're rubbish? In fact, the name derives from their debut for some Formula One luminaries, but as members of the chamber choir Tenebrae, they have an impeccable pedigree. And when they took the stage, it was for the laudable purpose of celebrating the sort of domestic music-making that was the norm in Victorian and ...

New York Dolls, Garage, Glasgow
"These guys", informs New York Dolls singer David Johansen, with a sweep of the hand towards his band, "were drinking in a bar at Dublin Airport this morning. At 9am." His chuckle deepens as guitarist Sylvain Sylvain stammers something about Irish coffee in futile mitigation. "You're a disgrace," rejoins Johansen. Good. Disgrace is what we're here for, after all.

Rumors of hippie culture's demise have been greatly exaggerated. Hordes of modern-day hippies descended on the quaint western Michigan town of Rothbury over the weekend for the four-day Rothbury festival, a musical, cultural and ecological celebration that put Rothbury -- population 443, as of 2006 -- on the local, national, and even international musical map.
