Credo: Bill Drummond
I believe... Recorded music is a creative dead-end, fit only for the makers of advertising jingles, ringtones and movie soundtracks. Its sheer ubiquity will inspire music-makers to explore different ways of creating music, away from something that can be captured on a CD or downloaded.

Lang Lang: Virtuoso pianist or 'flashy' showman?
Love him – or loathe him? I actually quite like Lang Lang, who, as China's pre-eminent classical pianist, is now flamboyantly girdling the globe. Having interviewed him several times over the past few years, I've watched his metamorphosis from callow youth to debonair fashionability. He's a creature of instinct, not intellect, for whom posing and playing are indivisible: he'll be absolutely in ...

Iolanta, Opera Holland Park London La Gioconda, Opera Holland Park, London BBC Proms (1,6 and 14), Albert Hall/Cadogan ...
Commissioned as a companion piece to The Nutcracker and saddled with a lopsided libretto, Tchaikovsky's Iolanta was premiered in the same year as Maeterlinck's Pelléas et Mélisande. History has judged the opera with pettish condescension; applauding its bewitching orchestration while dismissing the vocal writing as uneven. Ostensibly a fanciful, even fey work, a thing of its own century and not ...
