Don't be so narrow-minded
I READ with utter disgust and increasing frustration your report about the Pas Youth Council (Federal Territory division) trying to get the Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry to scuttle another concert by a foreign artiste -- this time by pop rock singer Avril Lavigne ("Protest over concert" -- NST, Aug 11).

Haiti's top prosecutor resigns following a week of drama
A weekslong feud between two of Haiti's top lawmen ended this week with the abrupt resignation of the country's top prosecutor. Anita O'Day: The Life of a Jazz Singer
A good deal livelier than the usual music-doc embalming, this worshipful tribute to jazz singer Anita O'Day—completed shortly before her death in 2006 by her then manager, Robbie Cavolina, and co-director Ian McCrudden—is rescued from its own adoration (and too-busy faux-'50s graphics...

Bouncing cow and other iPhone add-ons
Ten years ago, the sight of a chunky mobile phone inspired so much awe and wonder that the notion of it slipping neatly into a back pocket, playing music, holding a diary, taking photos, pinpointing our position on a map or browsing the internet would have had us gasping for air.

Prom 29: RPO / Slatkin
Olympics past, present and future put the hop, skip and jump into this pair of Proms. Chen Yi's Olympic Fire came first in Leonard Slatkin's programme with the Royal Philharmonic – only fitting on the opening day of the Beijing Games. But had this crowd-pleaser been written by anyone but a Chinese national, we'd have considered it a cheesy Western imitation of traditional Chinese music. Chen ...

Last Night's TV: Baton charge has me hooked on classics
Maestro is an unabashed reincarnation of a tried-and-tested formula. So it was appropriate that many of the contestants looked like they were flogging dead horses. It takes quite some arrogance, I'd imagine, to stand before an orchestra and attempt to direct it with no idea at all as to how such a thing might be approached. But it was clear that some of the eight celebrities assembled in the ...
