James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, was a serious man. And he told me so. I was working at the San Francisco Bay Guardian, the alternative weekly newspaper, in the 1980s when I received a phone message from a Rev. Al Sharpton (yes, that Rev. Al Sharpton), from Macon, Ga., saying that James Brown wanted to talk to me. Both curious and skeptical, I called back.
