Three Dollar Bill
I absolutely adore Dick. Heck, life just wouldn't be the same without Richards. Fabulous Dicks like Burton, Gere, Branson and the Queen of Rock'n'Roll, Richard Wayne Penniman (a.k.a. Little Richard).

The Fratellis - (Interscope/Island/Universal)
I loved the Fratellis' debut, Costello Music , and have taken a shine to this for much the same reason: It's rock'n'roll. Straight-ahead, rollicking, fun, no-brainer rock'n'roll.

Slim Twig - (Paper Bag Records)
By all accounts something of a sensation in his hometown of Toronto, Slim Twig tries hard to carve out a space for himself as a successor in the tradition of swamp-based rockabilly, blues and boogie-woogie as perfected by the likes of The Cramps and Suicide.

Ron Sexsmith - (WEA/Warner)
Imagine walking into a small, half-lit backroom of a club and stumbling upon a guy sitting at the piano quietly singing to himself. Undetected, you stand at the doorway and enjoy the intimate musings of the performer, all the time wondering whether you should announce your presence.

Nico Muhly - (Brassland)
Nico Muhly's Mothertongue defies any musical categorization, and this is a really good thing. Muhly himself has risen to fame and acclaim through his string arrangements of bigger names like Björk, Rufus Wainwright, Will Oldham, The National and Antony (of The Johnsons fame).

Joel Miller - (artistShare)
This is Montreal saxophonist Joel Miller's follow-up release to Mandala in 2004. The jaunty and insistent melodies of the opening tracks Hospital Loop and Aulochrome are hooks for the intricate and spirited interplay of the tenor and soprano of Miller, the various reeds and flute of Bruno Lamarche, and the trumpet of Bill Mahar.

Islands - (Anti)
Bold and ambitious are written all over the second offering from our own Islands: musically, stylistically, instrumentally. Straight up, this is pop music, but we also have orchestrated strings, reggae drops, rock chops, calypso vibes, electronic tripping and other worthy worldly tangents.

You might not be familiar with his name, but you'd certainly recognize the list of artists he's collaborated with as string arranger - Will Oldham, Björk, Antony & The Johnsons, Rufus Wainwright, The National etc. Despite being the unripe age of 27, he's also written orchestral pieces for The Boston Pops, the Chicago Symphony MusicNOW, the American Symphony Orchestra and the Juilliard Orchestra, ...
