The editor's picks
Who doesn't like a hug? So it might be a little weird to be offered one on the street from a stranger, but that was just the ticket for Sick Puppies, an Australian band that sped up the alternative rock charts after their music accompanied a 2006 video advocating Free Hugs (search YouTube.com for "free hugs" to find the video).

Rock picks
Pop songs are most effective when they're forceful as well as sweet -- catchy on top, but with enough womp on the bottom to get you moving (or at least nodding your head). Exhibit A would be "Sandwich" (MoRisen Records), the latest album from Charlotte's Sammies. At the treble end of things, the guitars sparkle and shine, conjuring up jingle-jangle vibes of alternative Southern pop's '80s glory ...

Country picks
His short marriage to actress Renee Zellweger and recording of "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" notwithstanding, Kenny Chesney has made some good career decisions over the years. They've helped propel him to the top ranks of country music's recording and touring acts. While Raleigh isn't exactly the Caribbean (one of Chesney's favorite haunts), he's sure to kick up a beachcomber's share of sand ...

Orkestar Zirkonium
Balkan brass bands are large aggregations with lots of brass, a tuba/drum/percussion backbeat (one of the most infectious things on earth) and hot soloing by trumpets, saxophones, clarinets and assorted other instruments.

Boston still provides 'More Than a Feeling' in feel-good concert
Something about classic rock gets into one's DNA like nothing else. The joyous sound of it, cranked on electric guitars, infused with its majestic pop hooks, hits the body's central nervous system as a rushing wave of euphoric dopamine. This was proven repeatedly Thursday night at Boston's energetic, 105-minute concert at Hard Rock Live.
